Tips for building your own backyard fire pit.

1.Curing your grill protects the grill’s interior and exterior finish while preventing unnatural flavors in your first meals. Please follow these steps in curing your BBQ grill.

1.Lightly coat ALL INTERIOR SURFACES (including GRILLS, GRATES, and INSIDE of the BARREL).
2.Build a medium-sized fire on the fire grate.
3.After coals ash over, spread out coals, replace cooking grates, close lid and heat at approximately 250º F for two hours.
4.Re-coat GRATES and return to grill at approximately 200º F for two hours.
Your GRILL will then be ready for use. NOTE: Your GRILL will drip a lot of oil during the curing process and for several uses, but the dripping will slow over time. NEVER EXCEED 400º F BECAUSE THIS WILL DAMAGE THE FINISH AND CONTRIBUTE TO RUST. THE PAINT IS NOT WARRANTED AND WILL REQUIRE TOUCH-UP. THIS UNIT IS NOT WARRANTED AGAINST RUST.
2.To START FIRE – stack 50 – 60 briquets in a pyramid and saturate with lighter fluid (DON’T USE GASOLINE). Light coals in several places, close lid after briquets ash over or 1/2 gray, spread them out and start cooking. If one end burns faster use tongs to move coals from one end to the other for even heat. ALWAYS FOLLOW CHARCOAL AND LIGHTER FLUID MANUFACTURERS’ INSTRUCTIONS AND WARNINGS. USE OUTDOORS ONLY ON NONCOMBUSTIBLE SURFACE – 15′ AWAY FROM WOOD AND COMBUSTIBLE MATERIAL.
3.Control heat with amount and type of FUEL, DUAL DAMPERS and ADJUSTABLE FIRE GRATE. Adjust GRATE one end at a time. Wood burns hotter than coals. More airflow is more heat.
4.For no flare-ups, cook with lid in the down position. Add water to soaked hardwood chips for a smoked flavor.
5.Suggestion: Screw 3/4″ cup hooks (not furnished) on front of the wood shelf to hang cooking utensils.
6.Burn out may be rust out. Ashes left in the bottom of the GRILL too long hold moisture and rust through any thickness of steel. This grill is made of steel and cast iron, which WILL RUST, ESPECIALLY IF NOT PROPERLY CARED FOR.
7.Do not use self-starting charcoal as it will give unnatural flavor. Burn lighter fluid completely before closing lid.
8.After using, coat vegetable oil on interior grates and bare metal while warm to reduce rust. On the EXTERIOR, remove rust with wire brush and touch up with a high heat paint, available at most hardware/auto stores.
9.HINT: If cast iron grates get caked, put them in a self-cleaning oven. They will come out looking like new, but will require re-seasoning.
10.HEAT GAUGE may obtain moisture, which will steam out during cooking. Your heat gauge may be calibrated in your oven.
11.You may fill unwanted holes with nuts and bolts (not provided).
12.Problems getting the temperature up in the SIDE FIRE BOX, see below for some tips.

1.Make sure that the perforated area has been removed from the main grill and that the opening on the grill matches the opening on the SIDE FIRE BOX.

1.Make sure that you are using large logs of wood, not chips or chunks. You may use charcoal to start the wood, but if you just use charcoal the temperature will not get hot enough in the main chamber. You must use wood logs.
2.The dampers on the side of the side fire box and the top of the smoke stack will regulate temperature. If you have more air, the fire will burn hotter. If you have less air, the fire will burn cooler.

NOTE: Smoke will escape from areas other than the smokestack. This should not affect your cooking.

You know the saying, ‘ there is more than one way to fillet a fish’, well, there is, and this is one of the English ways to do it. The most important thing to have is a sharp boning knife. If you don’t have a boning knife, use the longest knife you have with the sharpest blade. Be confident making your knife strokes and that will help you get good, clean cuts. I have stopped justifying my love of charcoal and just smile knowingly when the questions come. Unless charcoal grilling is in your blood you just wouldn’t understand why so many of us prefer it. Charcoal grilling embodies everything that is to be loved and enjoyed about backyard grilling. All charcoal grillers have their own favorite way to light the coals. No simple pushing an ignition button for us, lighting coals is part of the experience. My preferred way to get my coals going is by starting a little fire with a rolled up piece of newspaper and some dry garden twigs. Once I have a nice little fire going I slowly start adding coals. The first few catch very quickly and from there I just add a few at a time making sure they rest on the grey ash of the previously lit coals.

I could be doing lots of other things while the coals burn to a nice ash grey, but I don’t. I like to watch the process and be at hand to nudge a piece of coal here, nudge another there. A glass of red wine in hand is always nice, but it is not a necessity. Next time you go to light your coals, put away the fire sticks and the fire lighter, they can really affect the taste of the food. Just collect some small twigs from your garden and start your fire with those. You will be amazed at how quickly the fire starts and your food will certainly taste better. You save some money at the same time.

Landmann Stars & Moons Big Sky Fire Pit, Georgia Clay Review

The Landmann Big Sky fire pit is a great, durable, outdoor fire pit, big enough for the whole family and a few friends thrown in as well. Landmann makes some unusual, yet highly functional and stylish fire pits. They look classy in your back garden or, on your patio, and at the same time, are portable enough to take with you camping.

The Stars & Moon design is just one of several different cutout designs, another is wild animals and that seems to be a kids favorite. Both come in two different depths, either 10 inches or 12.5 inches. The deep pit is perfect for burning logs and the large cooking area is large enough for cooking for a large family. The enamel grill rack, spark cover and the poker all make this a really versatile fire pit and outdoor cooking fire.

It is recommended that you place about 5lbs of sand in the base to insulate the ground from the heat. This may be of concern if you are using the fire pit on a wood patio and don’t have any bricks underneath, otherwise you will be OK. I can’t think of too many people who would consider lighting a fire pit on a pristine grass lawn, or plastic decking, but, if in doubt, stand it on a paving stone. The sand is also recommended to prevent corrosion from the ashes, however, if you empty the fire pit each time you have used it, the ashes will not be a problem. Besides, moving around get’s just a bit harder with 5 lbs of sand in the base.

There are lots of great things to say about this fire pit, and countless users love it. It’s your call about adding sand in the base, I am not going to because the added weight will make it too difficult for me personally to move around. I read a couple of reviews where buyers said they put 30 lbs if sand in the base and are very happy.

Probably the most important thing to remember is to either use a tarp or other waterproof cover, or move the fire pit undercover when not in use.
